School VisitsMaple

  • How does a writer work?
  • Where does a writer get their ideas?
  • How do words and pictures combine to form a children's book?
  • What are the "tools" that can transform a student-or-teacher-into an accomplished writer?
  • How do writers organize thoughts and plan their writing?

These and many more aspects of writing are discussed in a challenging, fun and memorable author's visit geared to a school's schedule and needs. Children have the tools necessary to become a fine writer-they just need to know what they are and how to use them. In this era of No Child Left Behind, the object of these programs is to help schools, students, teachers, and administrators meet - and exceed-local, state, and national writing standards.

Author-in-Residence Programs

These year-long programs create a working relationship between schools, teachers, students, and the author. Working with individual classes, Reynolds introduces a book project, teaches students and teachers the necessary skills to complete the project, monitors the program's progress between visits, mentors teachers, and helps celebrate the book's creation.

Teachers as Writers Workshops Fishing

In a recent survey, ninety-two percent of teachers in the U.S. reported that writing is the subject they find most difficult to teach. These half-day or day-long professional development programs help transform teachers into writers. The writing exercises and challenges used during the workshops can be brought back to the classroom as teaching tools for the students. Teachers who use Reynolds' "S' more" program in their classrooms report a significant improvement in students' standardized test scores and reading comprehension.

Excerpts from conversations with children in the program-

"I loved when you were here to help and explain about writing." -Chloe 4th grade, Mishawaka, IN

"I learned to love writing when Mrs. Reynolds came to my class because she does, and she taught us how." - Sarah 3rd grade, Muncie, IN
